You can’t open a magazine or a fashion blog without hearing the name Alexander Wang. His name is on every tastemakers’ lips. From too-cool-to-care rocker chicks to effortlessly chic off-duty models, Alexander Wang has amassed a near-rabid following over the course of a few short seasons. And now Toronto’s pretty young things will have the chance to meet the man behind the style at Bloor Street’s Holt Renfrew on Wednesday, July 21 from 12-1:30 pm.
I’ll admit that I’m one of Wang’s many admirers. I love his femininely masculine aesthetic – he takes the idea of “boyfriend clothes” to the next level. For Spring 2010, Wang presented his version of the All-American football star: a sexed-up woman unafraid to wear a corset over a slouchy sweatshirt or pair a letterman’s jacket with mesh harem pants. And come Fall 2010, his girl will be reinventing the pinstripe suit – a Wall Street staple – and wearing it in midriff- and hipbone-exposing iterations. (Note – may not actually be appropriate in most offices.)
Of course, any discussion about Alexander Wang would be incomplete without mentioning his seemingly uncanny ability to set trends. He was one of the biggest purveyors of the sexy-slouchy-I-just-rolled-out-of-bed-looking-this-cool style that was the uniform of choice for girls like model/designer Erin Wasson. And have you noticed you can’t turn a corner nowadays without seeing a girl sporting a messy, mussy side braid? Blame Wang for that one too. And this fall, when everyone and their mother is wearing a L.V.D. (Little Velvet Dress) that looks like it was ripped from the wardrobe of the O.G. Melrose Place, it’ll be safe to assume they were partially inspired by Wang’s fall collection. But it’s not just clothing trends he’s fueling – the man knows how to make some hot accessories. Look no further than his leopard Alla Wedges to his studded Rocco Duffels to his newly launched eyewear collection, which have all appeared on many an editor’s wish list. I know they’ve been on mine.
