Editor-in-chief, Sara Koonar, sits down with Project Runway Canada season two runner-up Jessica Biffi, to talk about her Spring/Summer 2010 collection that she debuted at the LG Fashion Week tents just a few weeks ago.

Jessica BiffiThe weather was not on my side as I walked to the Brill building on John Street, downtown Toronto.  I was there to shoot AdornedMagazine.com’s first ever video interview with the talented Canadian Designer, Jessica Biffi. The wind caused my hair to spin into a tornado-like mess and my face was frozen into a frown, not a great look for on camera.

After watching all the shows at fashion week, Biffi’s stood out. Her show opened with a video of a model moving robotically to bass-pounding electronic music. The first model marched out in a glow-in-the-dark dress that had been decorated in graffiti art and was followed by models wearing body-conscious outfits that could be seen in a pop princess’ music video. Biffi did not hold back.  Although many of the dresses and jumpsuits would likely only suit a club-going, 90-pound supermodel with an attitude, she was out to make an impression.

I had asked my trusted cameraman, Will, to meet me at the pr Jessica Bifficompany’s brand new offices, sending him the street address by text. As I stood outside waiting for him to arrive, my hair began to catch leaves and twigs and I became worried Biffi would be shocked when she saw that her interviewer was a cave woman.

I gave up on waiting and went inside, as Will was late, which was peculiar because he had insisted we go early to set up. When my phone rang a frantic Will explained he was lost and could not find the office in the residential area he was walking through. Blame Google Maps! When Will had searched for 125 John Street in Toronto, Google sent him to a suburban area uptown, far from where I stood. I had to start thinking of ways to pass the time until he arrived… which would eventually be an hour late.

Biffi walked in promptly.  I of course had hoped she would be fashionably late. Although this situation could have easily blown up in my face, with the designer throwing her coffee on me because she would be late for a fitting… Jessica BiffiBiffi instead remained extremely cool. We were in the offices of fashion publicists, which meant there were endless things to do to amuse ourselves, so we chose to rummage through all the new magazines that had just arrived on their desks.

Sometimes in journalism the best interviews happen when the camera is not rolling. As we flipped through both fashion magazines and trash, we talked about dating, friends, food and music. It was as if we were a pair of childhood friends giggling over the high school jock at a sleepover. Thus, I decided to make the most of this moment and ask Jessica some “Quirky Q&A”.

Fall/Winter or Spring/Summer? Although she just showed her Spring/Summer 2010 collection at LG Fashion Week she responded, “Hands down, Fall/Winter!” Biffi loves scarves, cardigans, boots and all the layering that comes with fall and winter fashion. There is more room to play.

Jessica BiffiLady Gaga or Rihanna? Biffi went for Gaga (she pronounces it with a French accent) because she believes Gaga is a trailblazer when it comes to fashion and style and loves the fact that she doesn’t give a sh*t about what people think.

On whether she preferred the new 90210 or the original, she confessed that she was never a huge fan of either but would always get excited when the original came on because her brother would sing his own version of the famous theme song. She admitted this was probably the most bonding she did with her sibling.

The most famous person she has ever met? Umm… duh! Iman, the host of Project Runway Canada, who has had an incredible career as a model and is married to David Bowie… it doesn’t get any more famous than that.

It was then that Will arrived and we sat down for a more formal interview. I almost wished that we could have kept gossiping and talking all day, as Biffi is amazingly fun to be around, but it was time to get down to business.
