Screaming and Punching: The MMVAs

black eyed peas much music awards

The 2009 Much Music Video Awards were possibly the best yet when it came to celebrities. The Canadian music video station had the Jonas Brothers hosting, Lady Gaga performing and Taylor Lautner presenting. The line-up couldn’t be more exciting. But if you watched the show, you already know what happened on stage; I am here to tell you what happened behind the scenes.

I arrived at Much Music at 7:30pm on Sunday evening to pick up my press pass and wrist bands to access different areas backstage. I bypassed the stage and went straight for the party, a room inside where all the artists are huddled, snacking on appetizers and knocking back drinks. I grabbed a glass of wine and began to mingle with old friends, such as the boys of Protest the Hero, and met some new ones too, like Mr. Aaron Carter and Odario Williams of Grand Analog. It was in interesting mix of personalities all inside one tiny room.

All the popular American celebrities like Kim Kardashian, The Black Eyed Peas and Kelly Clarkson were not among the party crowd because the presenters and performers had green rooms so they could quickly make their way to the stage when they were needed. Luckily, I was able to

meet them when I made my way up to the press room. After each presenter, award winner or performer were finished with their on-stage duties they came to the press room where journalists like yours truly would badger them with questions.

Alexisonfire told us about the one time lead singer George Pettit threw a female fan into the crowd at a show, but the venues ceiling was so low and she ended up knocking her head off the roof. Kim Kardashian shared with us that Spencer and Heidi Pratt called her to insist she sign with their record label, too bad Kim was not interested in a music career. Karl Wolf gave us the good news that his single Africa had gone double platinum but the original song writers were reaping most of the rewards, collecting 75 per cent of the royalties. Natalie, a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, shared that she would be interesting in singing, but the style of music she would like to perform is still undecided.

After the press room I headed outside, directly behind the stage. There artists sat smoking cigarettes and mingling with their peers. I

suddenly turned around when I felt a rush of people coming from behind me; it was the Jonas Brothers on their way to the stage along with their entourage and security. I nodded and smiled at Joe Jonas and he gave me a quick hello. I didn’t realize I was a Jonas Brothers fan until I felt my heart skip a beat after our quick exchange.

The show quickly came to an end and it was time for the after-parties. The first stop of the night was Ultra, Much Music’s official after- party hosted by The Black Eyed Peas. When I arrived, I went over to Rumer Willis and Audrina Patridge’s table; I had

met them the night before at This Is London. Rumer was a doll but Audrina was a little bit of a diva – I spotted her constantly on her phone or complaining about the crowd. My stay at Ultra didn’t last long because as more celebrities arrived, so did more paparazzi and fans. It got extremely crowded and uncomfortable. So, I headed out passing Lady Gaga and an obnoxious Perez Hilton on their way in. I then ventured over to Circa, where bands like Bedouin Soundclash had taken over the DJ booth playing those old school tracks that you know every word to. This party was fun but there was little to report on so I made my way to the next. I arrived outside Century Room for Drake’s party (Rihanna’s new main squeeze) to find the club locked off with the police surrounding the front door. I asked partygoers what had happened and heard that two gunmen were inside the party; although no one had been shot the ETF team was called to ensure nothing happened. Some attendees were cut and bruised as they tried to escape the club. To avoid the drama and chaos, I walked over to Cobra, where Universal was holding their official after party and found

Lady Gaga and Perez Hilton there as well. They must have not stayed at Ultra much longer after I left.

I had been in my heels for almost seven hours and I was ready to hit the sack. As I was leaving I heard the bouncers announce that The Black Eyed Peas were heading inside and for everyone to move out of the way. I jumped into a cab and headed for the closest diner for a quick bite to eat before heading home.

To my surprise at the diner, Fran’s at Victoria and Shuter, I found MTV Live host Darren Jones and the ladies of Girlicious. It was then that I received the text message saying that Perez Hilton and Will.I.Am were in a confrontation that resulted in Perez being punched outside of Cobra, just minutes after I left. Immediately the diner began to buzz as everyone received the news. Quickly people began to speculate and come up with different scenarios as to why it had happened.

Monday morning I woke up to 75 emails in my inbox asking me what happened last night, since I had been Twittering from the awards that night and mentioned the fight. I watched the video statements both Perez and Will

posted on their blogs about the previous night and tried to figure out the truth of what really happened that night.

All I can tell you is what I know. When I met Will.I.Am he was gracious, kind and extremely laid back. When I saw Perez at Ultra that night he was being rude, teasing people and acting extremely arrogant. I am not saying Perez provoked Will.I.Am and his manager (who turned himself in to Toronto police for assault) but I am not saying this could be completely innocent either.

All in all the night wasn’t lacking drama. It was full off screaming teenage fans, celebrities, good music and unfortunately some violence. If you want to read all my tweets from the awards you can follow Adorned on twitter.com/adornedmag.
