Curlistas, listen up! With the warmer weather around the corner, my advice to most curly-tops is to go au natural, and let the humidity engulf your curls! There’s nothing hotter and sexier than a voluminous mane of curls… and the warmer weather gives you just that, with the right products.
But while most of our straight-haired cousins turn to curling irons and rollers for dramatic looks when prepping for a night out on the town or for a big event, we achieve a dramatic effect by going straight.
So, in honour of those special events, I’ve compiled a list of must-have products and tools that will help you achieve your straight look with ease… and without a hand cramp.
This may seem redundant, because we all know how important it is to moisturize our mane, but it’s worth repeating. Using a good moisturizing shampoo will reduce frizziness and help create a smooth, silky look. Try products from SunSilk and Pantene – they can get pretty specific, so you can choose the ones that are right for you.
2. Butterfly Clips/Duckbill Clips
These are essential in the hair-straightening process. The clips, which are available at your drugstore for under $4.99 for a set are good to help divide your hair into sections. I like to comb each section and wrap the hair into twists around my finger before pinning it to the top of my head. This helps curtail frizz and makes it easier to dry.
3. Smoothening/Straightening Serum
Now, not everyone needs this. If your hair holds moisture naturally, you may want to try straightening it without any extra product in it. But if you do need product to smooth fly-aways and hide split ends, try BioSilk’s smoothening serum or Dove’s Frizz Control Therapy.
4. Hot Air Brush
I swear by this. I haven’t used a blow dryer in ages. You can pick up an affordable hot air brush or styler on Amazon.com or your local beauty supply store. Try the Babyliss Hot Air Brush. This is the most amazing tool designed for us Curlistas. It’s a blow dryer and round brush all in one. It has two to three settings, and reduces the styling time in half. It also helps add volume to give you a more natural ‘straight look’.
5. Wet To Dry Ceramic Flat Iron
Perfect for achieving the ‘stick straight’ look. CHI has earned its place in the heart of women everywhere – especially with their wet-to-dry flat iron. You can use this to finish off the look, or to create a dramatic face-framing effect.
So there you have it, Curlistas – 5 tools that are certain to get as many heads turning as when you walk out of the house with your curls in all their glory. Good luck!
